Attic rodent proofing in Lubbock, TX.

Last reviewed: January 2026

Roof rats reach a Lubbock attic from one of six places: a degraded soffit vent screen, a gap between the fascia board and the roof sheathing, a torn gable-vent screen, an open dryer or bathroom vent, a chase around a plumbing stack, or the gap above the garage door where the trim meets the roof. Attic proofing is a roof-only program: we work the six points one by one, hardware-cloth or sheet-metal each one to a permanent close, and verify with a smoke pencil that no air is moving through the seal.

Attic rodent proofing is the roof-line exclusion work that permanently closes the access points roof rats use to enter attic spaces: primarily soffit vents, gable vents, and the gaps where fascia boards meet roof sheathing as wood shrinks over time. In Lubbock, TX, attic proofing is the definitive long-term solution for the cold-front-driven roof-rat incursions that hit older neighborhoods every October.

How roof rats get into Lubbock attics.

Done right the first time.

Roof rats are exceptional climbers. They reach attic access points via trees, fences, utility lines, and brick wall surfaces. Once at roof level, the primary entry points are: soffit vents with worn or missing screening, gable vents with plastic screening that has cracked or pulled away from the frame, and the junction between the fascia board and roof sheathing where wood has dried and shrunk over decades. Plastic or fiberglass screening on attic vents fails in West Texas conditions, UV exposure and temperature cycling cause it to crack at the corners within 3–5 years.

What attic rodent proofing includes.

Five visits at most. Often three.

  • Roof-line inspection: physical inspection of every soffit vent, gable vent, fascia section, and roof-penetration point from both the attic interior and exterior.
  • Soffit vent coverage: hardware cloth installed behind or inside every soffit vent opening. Existing worn screening removed first.
  • Gable vent reinforcement: hardware cloth applied to every gable vent opening, fastened to the frame.
  • Fascia-gap blocking: sheet metal or wood blocking plus mesh at the fascia-sheathing junction where gaps exist.
  • Pipe chase sealing: foam-and-mesh at every roof penetration where the boot or flashing does not fully close the circumference gap.
  • Documentation: before-and-after photo record of every sealed location.

Frequently asked questions.

Why do I keep getting roof rats in my attic even after treating?
Because the entry points were never sealed. Roof rats that were trapped or baited out this October left the same soffit vents and fascia gaps open for the next population to use next October. Attic proofing with hardware cloth and sheet metal closes those access points permanently.
Can roof rats chew through hardware cloth?
No. Hardware cloth (galvanized welded wire mesh) cannot be chewed through by rats or mice. Plastic screening can be. This is why the material matters, replacing worn plastic screening with more plastic screening does not solve the problem.
Do you seal vents completely?
No. Attic vents need airflow for moisture control and temperature regulation. We install hardware cloth behind or inside the vent frame, airflow is maintained but the opening is closed to rodent entry.
How do I know if my soffit vents have gaps?
Look for sagging or missing screening, gaps at the vent corners, or any point where you can see light through the vent from inside the attic. If you have had roof-rat activity and the vents have not been reinforced with hardware cloth, assume they are accessible.
Is attic proofing something I can do myself?
Soffit and gable vent coverage is technically DIY-possible if you are comfortable on a ladder and in the attic. The challenge is full coverage, missing even one fascia gap or open pipe chase leaves an access point. We inspect from both inside and outside the attic, which is necessary for complete coverage.
Does attic proofing also stop mice?
It stops roof rats. Mice primarily enter at foundation level through weep holes and utility penetrations, a separate exclusion step. If the property needs both, we do both in the same visit.
How soon after treatment should attic proofing be done?
Ideally within the same week as the treatment program. Closing the access points while bait or traps are still active stops new animals from entering while the existing population is being reduced.
10–14 Day Follow-Up Guarantee

We return after treatment to confirm the activity has stopped, at no additional charge. No follow-up = no sign-off.
